Being prepared is a motto that everyone is familiar with! Ensuring our SIA licensed security officers are prepared to do their roles is one of the most important things we can do to ensure their safety and well-being when on shift. Alongside a branded jacket to keep our security guard warm and dry in colder weather, we also supply a vest and body camera. These cameras are able to gather both audible and visual evidence, promoting the safety of our security officers, and the safety of your business.

Why are body cameras important for security officers to wear?

When you have security guards present on site, such as with our manned guarding security service, there will inevitably be a decrease in crime at your business. This is simply because their presence is an excellent deterrent to individuals thinking about taking a chance to cause damage or steal from your business. Should someone be undeterred by the physical presence of a security guard, they might think twice when they see that guard is wearing a body camera. Footage gathered from these cameras can – and are – used in court as evidence. They’re arguably much more reliable and convincing to a judge and jury than a spoken testimony. Knowing that everything they say and do could be caught on camera is a pretty convincing deterrent to criminals.

How do body cameras differ in effectiveness from CCTV?

As with most things, there are pros and cons to exclusively using either body cameras or CCTV cameras.

One of the main benefits of CCTV cameras is that they’re always on. However, they will inevitably have blind spots, the quality isn’t always very good depending on visibility and they are often subject to vandalism. Some CCTV cameras are able to gain audio alongside the video they capture, but this depends on the type of cameras you have installed. They require regular maintenance, including trimming back trees or hedgerows that might hinder their views and render them useless.

With body cameras on a trained security guard, there’s the obvious limitation that the camera will only capture footage where the security guard is! However, should a security officer be involved in an incident, everything that happens will be caught on camera. This includes if the security officer has to chase a perpetrator trying to escape, and that could make the difference between them being caught and held accountable or not.
