According to the government website 'the role of COVID-19 secure marshals or equivalents is not to enforce COVID-19 regulations or have any enforcement powers, which should remain the remit of the police and designated local authority compliance and enforcement officers. COVID-19 secure marshals or equivalents should instead engage, explain and encourage best practice and national COVID-19 secure guidance.

This means that COVID-19 marshals have had varying responsibilities including:

  • Directing pedestrians
  • Providing information
  • Cleaning touchpoints
  • Preventing mixing between groups
  • Being a point of contact for information on government guidelines

It's reported that the most common rule breaks that COVID-19 Marshals have had to advise on were people not wearing masks in stores and people leaving home for non-essential journeys. Even though infection numbers are currently reducing and plans to relax restrictions are imminent, it still remains that this government guidance is enforceable by law and as such still need to be taken seriously.

Once the plan out of lockdown begins to emerge, taking it slowly, abiding by the rules and ensuring people are socialising safely will become the top priority of COVID-19 Marshals. As we begin to see the return of larger and larger events, the role could adapt further as their expertise and guidance could be required for responsibilities such as crowd control. This, therefore, remains a fluid and adaptable role, just as it has been since it's introduction.

It might be that the role of COVID-19 Marshal is adapted into other security positions that we recruit for. For instance, combining the roles and responsibilities of COVID-19 Marshals and Door Supervisors when the clubs reopen once more -- hopefully in the summer. Just as we have had to adapt as a company throughout the pandemic, we will continue to be flexible in our approach to supporting local authorities, local councils, members of the public and business owners to provide an exceptional and adjustable security service.

For more information on how we can work with your local council during these unusual times by providing trained COVID-19 marshals, please don't hesitate to get in touch a member of our team.

Alternatively, if you're looking to further your career within the security industry and want to support your country in the fight against coronavirus, please check the careers section on our website or email us an up to date copy of your C.V.
