As the UK slowly regains confidence in venturing out into public, the debate remains on how effective face masks are and whether or not wearing them anywhere in public should be compulsory. Everyone has differing opinions, and this is largely influenced by their own individual circumstances. It's a case of accessing risk and making the best decision for you. What it boils down to is, if face masks aren't compulsory in certain public spaces, then it's important to respect both those who choose to wear one, and those who choose now to. With social distancing becoming the new normal, face masks remain a hot topic.

When it comes to security, face masks pose a unique set of challenges. For door supervisors, manned guarding and mobile patrols, identifying suspicious behaviour, threatening body language or spotting a trespasser and handling the situation is unaffected by the use of masks. If an individual shop lifting, for example, chooses to wear a mask, their identity isn't an issue if they are caught in the act.

The problem arises primarily with CCTV. Even in the most ideal conditions, making a positive identification can be a challenge. The quality of the image relies on the type of CCTV equipment you've invested in, the angle of the individual, any obstructions and lighting, for example. When you factor in a facemask, it becomes even more difficult to obtain clear footage that can identity a thief beyond any reasonable doubt.

This is where contracting a trusted security provider to implement manned guarding, mobile patrols or door supervisors at your business becomes a much more sensible investment. With this option, not only are you more likely to catch someone in the act of committing a crime, but you will also be able to make a positive identification. What's more, is manned guards are an excellent deterrent to crime, reducing the risk of anything theft and damages to your business premises.
